Wanita members defend AGM
KUALA LUMPUR: Several Wanita MCA committee
members have defended the move to push on with
the wing’s annual general meeting (AGM) on
Saturday.
Wanita MCA secretary-general Senator Heng Seai
Kie said the AGM was not against the party’s
constitution.
“It was also not against anybody and there was
no hidden agenda,” Heng told the MCA central
delegates yesterday.
Rapt
attention: MCA central committee members and
delegates giving party president Datuk Seri Ong
Tee Keat a standing ovation at the MCA’s 56th
annual general meeting in Kuala Lumpur
yesterday.
Wanita MCA national organising secretary Tan
Cheng Liang said many delegates had taken the
effort to attend the AGM.
“They had to take leave from work and pay for
their airfare to attend the AGM. They did not
come here just for a meal,” she said.
Tan pointed out that the Wanita MCA central
committee’s emergency meeting on Friday evening
was called with only two hours’ notice and this
contravened the party’s by-laws, which required
a three-and-a-half-days’ notice.
“I raised this matter during the Wanita central
committee meeting but no one took notice,” she
added.
At the AGM on Saturday, Tan had taken over the
microphone after Speaker Ooi Siew Kim declared
that the meeting was adjourned as the Wanita MCA
central committee had decided to postpone it.
After Ooi walked away,
Tan pushed for the AGM to continue and got the
floor to elect Kelana Jaya MCA division chief
Ong Chong Swen as replacement speaker.
